From Precision to Purpose: How my journey toward a JD was inspired by the Jamshidi Needle
In my family, the pursuit of knowledge is more than a tradition — it’s a legacy. From a young age, I was raised with a deep appreciation for education, innovation, and the courage to forge new paths. But this wasn’t just a philosophy we spoke about around the dinner table — it was something we lived. One of the most powerful symbols of this legacy is the Jamshidi Needle, a groundbreaking medical tool created by my family member, Dr. Khosrow Jamshidi.
Dr. Jamshidi, a visionary physician and innovator, designed the Jamshidi Needle to improve bone marrow biopsy procedures. Before his invention, bone marrow sampling was far more invasive and imprecise. His design revolutionized the field by providing a safer, more efficient, and more accurate method to extract bone marrow samples — offering life-saving insights for diagnosing conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and other serious blood disorders.
The Jamshidi Needle is not just an instrument of precision, but of possibility. It represents the power of education applied with purpose, the courage to challenge established methods, and the drive to pioneer new solutions where none existed before. Growing up knowing that this innovation came from within my own family has profoundly shaped my worldview. It taught me that progress is born from curiosity and courage, and that every contribution, no matter how specialized, can change lives on a global scale.
In our family, education has always been celebrated not just as a means to personal success, but as a way to impact the world. We were raised to ask questions, to dig deeper, and to never accept limitations as final. Whether in science, technology, or beyond, pioneering new methodologies and paving our own paths has been our way of honoring that legacy.
Inspired by these values, I have chosen to follow my own path of precision and purpose — through the study of law. While medicine and law may seem like very different fields, they share a crucial commonality: both require the courage to confront complexity, the skill to extract truth, and the dedication to create meaningful change.
Just as Dr. Jamshidi designed a tool to reveal critical insights beneath the surface, my goal as a future legal professional is to uncover truth within complex systems and use that knowledge to advocate for justice. Pursuing my Juris Doctor (JD) feels like a natural extension of my family’s legacy — combining intellectual rigor with a commitment to make a tangible impact.
As I continue my journey, the story of the Jamshidi Needle serves as a daily reminder: that innovation begins with education, progress demands precision, and the courage to forge your own path is the greatest legacy of all.
